His 50’s

In my Dad’s 50s he choose early retirement after a stint as an editor at Guide Posts (the religious magazine), work at Insurance Services Organization and work as a free lance editor of college text books.

Those years gave Dad more time to read everything ever published but competition to reading was introduced. At about age 50, in 1987 or so, with Steve and I old enough to work as busboys, the family afforded its first color TV and VCR. These, unfortunate events put an end to the distinction of our family being the only one that anyone had ever heard of at the time with only a Black and White TV. The events also lead to Dad’s abundant discovery and frequent use of the video section of the Pearl River Public Library. To me, this was sort of a betrayal. For Dad, who I’m sure thought of himself as a member of the literati, to turn to watching videos all of the time was like Gloria Steinum becoming a pinup girl.

In Dad’s late 50s, my parents' lifestyle improved since my brother and I were out of college and at some point were contributing to the family- we even paid off their mortgage.

Dad and Mom liked to vacation in Turkey, Spain, the Caribbean, Block Island, Thailand, Hilton Head and at Family Reunions.

Dad liked doing his civic duty and appearing as a juror and election volunteer. What do you expect from a guy who reads on Saturday nights?
